Karina Aguilera Skvirsky (1969, Ecuador) is an artist working in photography, video art and performance. At the core of her methodology is an interrogation of the documentary image and how it functions within media and art. Her work stands in a productive tension within a conceptual art tradition, on the one hand, and formalism and aesthetics, on the other.
Skvirsky’s work has been exhibited internationally in group and solo shows including: La Ex-Culpable, Lima, Peru (2010), Scaramouche Art, NY (2010), El Museo Municipio de Guayaquil, Ecuador (2010), The Grossman Gallery, PA,(2008), The Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, CT (2007), Sara Meltzer Gallery, NY (2006), Smack Mellon, NY (2007), Momenta Art, NY (2006) and others.
Recently, she participated in There is always a cup of sea for man to sail, the 29th Sao Paolo Biennial, where she exhibited work from her project, Memories of Development, a multi-part project that investigates the psychological and cultural legacy of Latin America’s “third world” status through performance, video, and photography.
Skvirsky received her BA in Spanish Literature from Oberlin College and her MFA in Photography from Indiana University. Artist residencies include: The Cuts and Burns Residency (2009), Harvestworks, NY (2006), MacDowell Colony, NH (2010 and 2005), The Workspace Program from the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council (2003), Smack Mellon, NY (2004), and others.
